Style & Instagrammables in Bali

I think Bali is everyone’s creative place – whether just for the feed, for your style photos or just to spark something inside your right brain. Here are my recommendations aside from the island tours and what I wore in these places.

Modern Restaurants/Bars

There are so many trendy cafe’s and restaurants in Bali, especially in Seminyak area, where you can see it left and right. My top pick and prolly the most Instagrammed one is Motel Mexicola, which made me feel like I’m in the tropical oasis of Mexico! There are visuals of art, religion and women lighted by neons. Don’t forget to visit the second floor and to visit int he afternoon. 😉

What to wear: casual. it is kinda hot in this place so while you can wear sparkly ones like below, make sure it is still comfortable!

Address: Motel Mexicola, Jalan Kayu Jati No. 9X, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia

Other places: Nalu Bowls, Cafe Organic, The Bistrot, Sea Circus, Ling Ling’s, Sushimi,

Wearing @mikkascloset dress and earrings

Beach Clubs

Very popular whether in Kuta or Seminyak, Bali has pretty beach clubs! My top pick is Potato Head Beach Club, which has very modern interiors and just the perfect spot for that sunset viewing.

What to wear: bikini or your coolest summer outfit

Address: Potato Head Beach Club, alan Petitenget No.51B, Kerobokan Kelod, Kuta Utara, Kerobokan Kelod, Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia

Other places: La Favela, La Plancha

Wearing @wearkimsantiago pair, @kirinkirin earrings

Traditional Cafe’s & Warung (Food)

Ubud, Kuta and Tabanan are great places for traditional Balinese food and restaurant interiors. Our Uber-turned-tour guide @Enno3170 whom we got the chance to talk and interview when were on our second day recommended these places which his tourists loved. The menu here are traditional, affordable yet of quality. Plus the interiors and traditional Balinese music, especially in Warung Dedari where we had lunch before going to Ubud. I highly recommend these places which are not yet so popular in social media but deserves the attention!

What to wear: Balinese inspired florals.

Addresses:

Merta Harum Agroo Luwak Coffee, Jl. Raya Mawang No.98, Lodtunduh, Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia

Warung Dedari, Jl. Raya Denpasar, Perean Tengah, Baturiti, Kabupaten Tabanan, Bali 82181, Indonesia

Warung Sunset, Jl. Sunset Road, Legian, Kuta, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia

Mertha Harum Coffee Luwak Ubud

Water Temples

I told myself that whenever I would go to Bali, I would visit these temples, not just for Instagram but for spiritual purposes as well. Uluwatu was one of the main recommendations but Enno could only take us to these two which we can reach in a day: Ulun Danu and Tanah Lot. Pura Ulun Danu is a beautiful complex

Anello, Japan’s IT Bag, Now in Manila!

Anello, which translates to “annual growth rings” in Italian, was founded in 2005 by Carrot Company, a world leader in the retail industry who also owns Legato Largo, a woman’s fashion brand, and Paquet du Cadeau, a brand that sells fun accessories. The company started its operation back in 1998 in Osaka, Japan.

Ever since I saw my mom use Anello as her everyday bag, I was convinced that I have to have one too. My kinda-OC mom’s everyday bag is usually big (with all the paper works, receipts, inventory reports, makeup) and I actually inherited that trait of hers since school up until now that I’m working. I just love big bags with wide openings and a lot of compartments!

So I was so happy that Anello, the world-renowned Japanese-Italian brand known for their signature wired wide opening backpack, is finally in the Philippines.

I attended the launch of Anello in Megamall Fashion Hall a few weeks ago and learned more about the brand.  Founded on the premise of improving people’s quality of life with pieces that you can use regardless of the season, anello, offers a full line of fashionably chic pieces that perfectly complement the lives of today’s multi-faceted individuals.

“The brand is really known for coming up with no-nonsense pieces that allow you to do more things and go more places,” shares Marnie Chua, President of Crossmerchant Inc, the exclusive distributor of anello Philippines. “Essentially, it answers the need for really trendy bags that do more than just hold things for its owner—one that is both sturdy, provide convenience and designed in such a way that it fits into most occasions.”

Ive always loved The Japanese’s keen attention to details and forward-thinking fashion sense as very evident in the structured silhouettes and added functions of the bags. And the best thing about it? anello offers bags that come in all forms, sizes, colors and materials, making sure to have something for everyone regardless of personal style.

Less than three weeks after this event, the brand went on and unveiled its impressive 100-sqm flagship store at Estancia Mall in Capitol Commons. Soon after, the third branch opened in UP Town Center. They also plan to open stores in Uptown BGC, Alabang Town Center and Robinsons Magnolia and more. Inside the store, I just love how the bags are organized in different styles. It’s just easy to understand, despite the variety.

“We decided to venture in the Philippines to answer the continuously growing clamor for the brand here.
Filipinos are one of the biggest consumers of anello bags, both in Japan, and in most other countries where we are present, and for that we are most thankful. In the years to come, we aim to continue producing new items to make sure that we are always able to delight and answer the needs of our customers,” shares Mr. Takeshi Yoshida, President of Carrot Company.

Abercrombrie & Fitch First Instinct

In the wake of its 2016 new fragrance for men, Abercrombie & Fitch is pleased to announce the launch of ‘First Instinct’ for Women, developed exclusively with Inter Parfums.

‘First Instinct’ for Women is inspired by that first moment of attraction, when two people’s worlds collide and a spark is ignited. It is the fragrant interpretation of that exciting first glance and initial connection. That very moment can’t be defined in words, nor can it be anticipated.

Like the Abercrombie & Fitch woman, she is truly unique, unlike any other in her originality, as well as effortlessly beautiful. She knows how to follow her first instinct with innate style, charm and femininity.

Developed by Fabrice Legros (Studio Pi), the design is “based upon a rectangular construction, yet with roundness that conveys femininity.” I like that the clear glass with a light pink metal cap is so feminine yet so stylish. I like these shades of pink!!

“I feel that First Instinct for Women is at once playful, feminine, and alluring says master perfumer Laurent le Guernec (IFF). “With a sensual opening, a sparkling development and a trail of irresistible yet effortless seduction, this formula was crafted to ensure captivation.”

The fragrance is definitely floriental. It may come off as strong floral, but I like that it has a nice fading to a creamy musky scent. Below are the notes.

Top: Sun-kissed Magnolia blooms coupled with uplifting Grapefruit Zest awaken the senses, while Passion Fruit adds a sweet dewy brightness. At once a sophisticated and playful opening.

Mid: Wild Orange Flower carries on the glistening floralcy while Butterfly Orchid blended with exotic Water Lily rounds out the heart of the fragrance. Femininity turns sensual and captivating.

Base: Warm Amber is heated by a contrasting blend of Creamy Tonka and Addictive Musk, brings an alluring trail of effortless seduction.

These are available at FRESH and select SM Stores. I’m excited to check out more of this brand’s fragrances in the future!

Thanks also to Style Weekend for the feature!

Free As Hair

Lady Gaga once said, “I’ve had enough, this is my prayer, that I’ll die livin’ just as free as my hair”. A while ago, my newest wig style arrived and I was so ecstatic to shoot it. Just to be clear, I love my natural hair (esp my current trim, color – c/o Cedar Salon) but there are just times that I want to take portraits of myself and express my mood without further damaging (through bleaching and coloring), thinning and styling my hair. I just wanna wear a wig cap, put on that lace-front wig, some makeup and then shoot. And below was today’s output.

  • Top: Topshop
  • Sunnies: Sunnies
  • Hair: Peary

The new Palmolive line -which Ill be sharing/reviewing soon- that does wonders for my natural hair lately

Gaining Confidence in Wearing A Bikini

I will admit that I have struggled with confidence in wearing a bikini through the years. Thing is, I don’t do much of tucking, wearing bra or those freebra, and working out in a gym. I still want to find comfort and consume less time with regards to these things.

IMG_5639

Aside from showing off like a perfect beach body, I didn’t really think that my bony cartileage around my neck, small zero boobs, broad shoulders and large veins/muscles would nicely fit in a suit. It was just hard and for us kinds of women. It is indeed a personal, beyond-beauty-kind-of struggle that one has to overcome only with confidence and the art of kebs.

So I practised. I have been posting some pictures of me wearing maillots or onesies in the bed or the comfort room, and some during photoshoots for the IG (meaning, I just wore it for the picture). See that above and below. My first ever bikini photo I posted was in 2013. But it was really a long time ago.

Acting like summer. 🌞 Day 2 of #soulsurf 🌊 📷: @hanejoys #mikkigalangootd

A post shared by M I K K I G A L A N G (@mikkigalangdotcom) on

But it was just only until maybe last year that I let go of the cover up, took photos of myself enthusiastically AND THEN REALLY wore them throughout the day without any hesitation or anxiety. And I’m very happy that I was able to do that.

Because really, I can wear anything I want for my pleasure. I can wear a basic one piece or a pretty designed one that I liked (see Freeway’s designs below*). I can wear a one piece soon and I am not afraid to share the struggles that come with it as well (definitely saying hello to my stretch marks which you can already see because duh, body foundation and beach really isn’t functional). I think I gained some confidence and that feels good.

Iridescent Girl Power

The second day of #Wonderfruitmusicfestival is the main attraction and I decided to wear something feminine, flattering to my body shape, yet strong and trendy. I also wore one of my favorite purchases this year from one brand I discovered on IG: an iridescent ‘Girl Power’ earrings from shopnin3.com (via Style Importers), which just speak so much to me as a trans woman, especially during international women’s month. I just love all the earring designs that they curate and I wanna purchase more (esp for that sticker label that says ” Make Yourself Hard to Kill”). They create strong designs for strong women and celebrate anyone who chooses to stray from the norm.
