The Armory

I was already on #YeezyMode when I visited my friend’s place, The Armory, prior to the Paradise Music Festival. I was extremely happy to see such a curated “underground” bar – lights and interiors conceptualized and DIY-ed by Andy Yuki – and drinks that are made out of passion (me and my friends just love to drink!)

The concept bar is located at Congressional storage, Congressional Ave. ext., next to Brewing Point. I was only able to get a preview of Bunker, which is a lounge below the mini- club, refectory and roof deck. From my house, I just have to take the NLEX and go straight to Mindanao Ave. I love the look and feel of the place, and I’m very particular to these things when I go clubbing especially depending on my mood. But with the kind of music that I listen to lately, I think that this will be my go-to bar hehe.

The drinks – from Martini’s, Bunker’s Mule, Amaretto Sour and mojito’s – are made using premium alcohol and ranges from PHP 180-220.

More photos are below. It will be open in a few weeks and I’m just so excited to spend time with my friends here!

Wiz, West, Afrojack at Paradise Music Festival

My experience of Paradise last week was one probably one of the biggest festival and most diverse for me, and as you know me, I just love diversity.  OPM, R&B, EDM, Hip&Hop, Pop – all of these genre’s in one event and it was just so freakin’ good, I didn’t want to leave Aseana City.

It was Kanye and Wiz’ first time to perform in Manila. It was also a lot of firsts for a lot of people – Paradise’s organizer’s first event (congratulations, Vian!), my first time to actually see Mr. West’s art, my best friend’s first time to a music festival, and a first time to hear different kinds of music in 8 hours.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

I definitely liked Wiz’ performance. Ever since, I liked his style and I was just so happy to hear No Sleep, Ass Drop, See You Again, Roll Up among others. His visuals were simple but hey, his songs speak louder!

It was a great 60 minutes of Kanye and while I don’t agree on some of his opinions, his style and art definitely was fiery.

Then Afrojack who I love (see Sparks-inspired post here). He visited here many times and he got the crowd! All of us were about to leave but he definitely made people’s heart beat faster!

I really hope that there can be more of this next year (hello Paradise). T’was definitely one great time for music and art.

Off to Paradise IMF!!

“It’s time for East to meet West”. American rapper and multi-Grammy-award winner Kanye West will headline the much awaited international music festival in The Philippines, the #ParadiseIMF, happening on April 9, 2016 at Aseana City, Paranaque featuring Wiz Khalifa (!!!), Austin Mahone, Afrojack, and Rudimental DJ as well.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

I’ve been checking out this fest since last year and the line up just kept on surprising me, especially when they announced Afrojack and Wiz Khalifa to perform (especially Wiz!! I really love his vulnerability and musical style).

This will be my 3rd music fest this year and I must say that this is probably the biggest and most diverse in terms of genre – Hiphop, Rap, EDM, OPM, etc. I’m also looking forward to our very own Up Dharma Down, Hale, Itchyworms, Yolanda Moon, Maude, Jessica Milner, Clara Benin, Joyce Pring, and Cheats (loveee!!)

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

Things to bring according to Paradise which I’ve been preparing: Sunglasses, mats/blankets, power bank, hand sanitizers. Of course, how can we forget rave makeup and nails (I like this UV top coat from Girl Stuff which makes any nail color more intense and glowing in the dark)

I have so much affinity for these kinds of festivals because it opens me to a lot of things – culture, different music, people. I like that these festivals also challenge me in terms of amping up style, especially this summer.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

Always in love with denim and I think I’ll be sporting some Levi’s icons and essentials which can be viewed at one of the Paradise booths. My favorite is the 501!

In term of makeup, let me share with you some of the 2016 makeup trends I learned from events and forecasts. We can draw inspiration from these for our makeup style this Saturday!

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

Makeup for music festivals for me should be wearable yet expressive whether at day or night. I like that we can be really creative here but since these are events that run for more than 8 hours, it should be long-lasting and comfortable as well. Above are some styles and below are micro-tips on how to preserve and wear them all-day, all-night.

  1. Dramatic Eyes –  Blue-green metallic smokey gradation in the eyes, even in the lower lash line, would appear very fresh and lively just like Kendall’s makeup above. You can also try accentuating with more intense pigments, shimmers or even glitters, as long as you prep & prime the lids to make it stay for a long time. Try MAC Prep & Prime or NARS Pro Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow.
  2.  Statement Lip – Orange, bright red, vamp or neutral. Try adding shimmers on contour areas of the lip for drama, and try wearing a lip primer and lip color in liquid/powder format to make it stay longer and non-transferrable.

I hope this helped and inspired you! See you there and follow me on snapchat(@mikkigalang) or Instagram (@mikkigalangdotcom) for event updates!

Tickets now available at ticketworld.com.ph/paradiseimf. GA is alreadt an ok option to optimize the experience of the festival as it would allow entry after 3pm, which will be the start of the major local and international acts.

After 15 years in the business, Asia’s definitive annual music festival, ZoukOut, is finally crossing borders. This year, ZoukOut breaks new ground on the fine, white sands of Boracay, Philippines. Together with co-presenter, the country’s #1 mobile brand, Globe Telecom, ZoukOut is out to redefine and amplify the LaBoracay experience. The much-awaited event is set to happen this summer on April 30 and May 1 at Epic and Uptown Beachfront, Boracay.

Adding to the excitement of the music fest, Globe rolled out a poll that allowed Filipinos to pick which home grown talents they want to represent the country at ZoukOut. Four big names in the Philippine electronic dance music industry, namely Mars Miranda, Deuce, Kat DJ, and Carlo Atendido, were cast as the official candidates.

Their respective crews and fan bases went all out in campaigning for their idols, and the race was definitely a close one. On March 29, ZoukOut PH and Globe identified the top 2 DJs who led the polls, namely Deuce, with 1,800 votes and Carlo Atendido, with 1,600 votes. Both officially bagged the opportunity to showcase their talent on the first ever Philippine ZoukOut stage. These Filipino talents will have the honour of playing their music alongside international DJs such as Kaskade, DVBBS and DubVision, among others.

The first 250 Globe customers will be able to avail of the exclusive ZoukOut ticket discount. One just has to text ZoukOut to 2363 and they will receive a unique code which they can present to SM TicketNet to get the special discounted rate for the 2-day General Admission ticket bundle. From the original price of P4500, qualified Globe customers will be able to avail P900 off.

Laid-Back in San Juan

I am no surfer. The cover photo is the closest that I got to that sport last week, but there’s something about their beach culture that drew me in when I attended the #SoulSurf festival 3 years ago. Music aside, I just would like to really experience that kind of lifestyle since I wasn’t able to really chill and rest well when RAC and CLASSIX came here before.

So, when my friend asked me where to go for the Holy Week, I told her I want to visit La Union. And thanks to NLEX, SCTEX and TPLEX, this surf central is accessible for 4-5 hour drive.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

It was a random trip so we didn’t have hotel reservations when we arrived. We were lucky to get the last few available rooms at 2 hotels: Costa Villa and San Juan Surf Resort. The former is Ok and more expensive than the latter but the major difference is the waves and accessibility to the restaurants and events. San Juan Surf Resort has a beach front where surfing and swimming are more safe and allowed, and is near a lot of the beachfront events and new establishments.

The weather condition last week was very unpredictable. We came at night, but even at day, it was really cold and the waves were really enormous. I can taste the salt from the sea, from afar and that feeling was really good. I really wanted to learn how to surf (I bought some gears!!) but it was only in our last day that a lot of the surfers appeared and played that sport. It made me appreciate how professional and passionate these people are when some things are dependent on Mother Nature.

So,  just more photos of being a beach bum below =)

A lot has definitely changed since my first visit to this surf central. There are lots of restaurants, bars, and new hotels near the central featuring local talent. My best food experience was at Gefseis Greek Grill which was so instagrammable, great in taste, price and service with an amazing beach view. I also visited Surf Shack where most of the surfer cutires go =) and Planet G, which has an exquisite club in the second-level called Clique.

It’s always a fun and memorable experience in  La Union. I made a short Instagram video to express this and I think I’ll be doing more of this =)

I Met BretmanRock!!

The first time I watched a makeup tutorial by Bretman in Facebook, I already knew that he’s gonna be big in the industry. Combine both real artistry and talent in makeup (contour and eye makeup skillz on point!!), with his comic yet real social statements on beauty, celebrities and makeup, it was easy to like and get a daily dose of inspiration and confidence from him. Such that.. a few months after, he became one Instagram sensation with 5M followers and viral super power.

Bretman Rock at Benefit Cosmetics, SM Megamall

Watching some of his Insta (above is one fave) and Youtube videos, I knew he was a Filipino and he hinted a vacation in the country, which he really liked. It was like Pia Wurtzbach coming to the Philippines especially for a makeup addict, social media sucker, and a drag race fan (I think he gets 30% of his comedy from this) like me. So when I saw Benefit Cosmetics having a meet & greet with Bret (he’s also a global influencer for a quirky-yet-real makeup brand), I didn’t want to miss an opportunity to quite know the crazy and ingenius and gorgeous person behind @BretmanRock.

Processed with VSCOcam with a8 preset

It was clear that Bret’s social power reached the Filipino youth, makeup and social media users alike. People were lining up and screaming his name even outside the store. Benefit allowed me to interview him YAY! I was really curious on his top makeup picks, beauty tips, and his message to the young LGBT Pinoys.

Below are some of the photos and videos I took during the Meet & Greet.

Bret was such a sweet and empowering confidences icon! When we were introduced (of course, I’m Starstruck and I couldn’t stop looking at his eye makeup, lips, brows, everything hehe), he told me about my nice color choices for my hair and lips. He’s a real makeup enthusiast! I did the same and asked some tips and and brands he’s using.

Bret’s favorite Benefit products.

I didn’t have much time but my last question was about his advice to the LGBT youth in the Philippines and I got really impressed by his message, the same way he inserts his smart opinions about makeup shaming, gays, bullying, etc on his fun videos.

I stayed for a little while and saw how he interacted with his Filipino fans. I must say: He’s the best! He embraced each one of them, complemented their looks and styles, and led the taking of selfies/twofies/groupies . Some fans cried and he hugged them tight and sincerely. I even heard him more excited and interested in meeting the public than doing the media/VIP interviews. This is how celebrities should do it!! =)

Before I left, I congratulated him and wished him even bigger and brighter career ahead of him. I couldn’t wait to see more from him in the coming years, and I hope that he does visit the Philippines more often because I really think we need icons like him both in showbiz and beauty industries.

Take Me Back to Wanderland

It was such a fun yet tiring 8 hours of just listening to amazing music, being with solid friends and long lost ones. This was probably the Wanderland that had the greatest line up of artists – Bon Iver, Panama, Death Cab for Cutie, and The Naked & Famous, such that, I didn’t mind at all that that I have only eaten burrito and churros the whole day haha.

Processed with VSCOcam with p5 preset

I arrived at the venue quite late due to work, but I really pressured my Uber driver to make it before Cheats and Panama’s performances. I like them so much!

Processed with VSCOcam with p5 preset

It was already dawn, and for an hour, I was just looking for my friends. It was quite hard due to the amount of people – both locals and foreigners who I’ve heard flew all the way to Asia just to listen to the musical acts. I was also hungry so i started lining up for food stalls which were overly crowded! Good thing I got the chance to find my friends, thanks to the good LTE signal in the venue.

I wore this top from Neon Island, and it was my first purchase from this very creative and socially responsible store. love how trendy, wearable and good the quality is!

It was The Naked & Famous‘ time to perform. I loved singing to this indie electronic band’s hit songs like Young blood and Heart Like Ours. This is my kind of music again (going back to 2010!! hehe)

Bon Iver

Then it was this man’s set. i basically wanted to drop everything (we were lining p for drinks, and thankfully, it was just a few minutes before we can finally go to the middle). It’s not hard to get emotional with ‪#‎BonIver‬‘s songs. Immediately when I saw winter/cool/blue backdrop’s at ‪#‎wanderlandmusicfest‬, I knew it was him and the feels that will come from his songs because it was that cathartic season,‪#‎bonhiver‬ (French word for “good winter”), that inspired him to write and play despite his liver condition.

Closing the fest: alternative rock band Death Cab for Cutie! He opened his set with What Sarah Said and it basically transported me back to the times I was struggling through a difficult time. These kinds of songs – the ones that helped you heal – left me teary-eyed at the venue.

I will forever be a wanderer. Despite how crowded this festival got (because well, it was really good), everything was worth it. Will definitely be back next year. For now, stay forever (listen to Panama below)

#GlobexWanderland2016

In 2013, Wanderland was founded and I got the chance to experience this indie festival, headlined by Temper Trap & Neon Trees, whose songs I first heard as soundtracks in TV shows that i watch. I really loved the experience and musical/artistic immersion in that event.I missed last year x Kid Cudi (ugh!!) but now, the annual music and arts festival, Wanderland is gearing up for another musical fete with this year’s anticipated line-up of international and local talents – see below. Together with the leader in digital lifestyle, Globe, on March 5, 2016, Saturday, at the Globe Circuit Events Grounds, festival aficionados are in for tons of special treats as they experience the excitement of the Globe Galaxy.

Chvrches x Passion Pit x #GoodVybesFest

Last year, I missed Passion Pit’s concert in Manila (even if it was cancelled!) and because I really love this indietronica band ever since their first album, Manners, in 2009 (I even made an LOTD based on my favorite song, Moth’s Wings) I made sure had the time for it despite my super hectic February. After all, this is a different and less upbeat festival from the EDM ones I attended last year, and I like more of the former now (#TitaMode)

Processed with VSCOcam with c8 preset

It was not my first Vybe festival as I attended one 2 years ago. I like that they’re very organized and unique in their events, although I noticed that the venue – Aseana Open Grounds – is not very condusive for a packed festival as it’s not polished and safe for the lungs and nose.  I ended up with a congested nose after due to the grounds’ dirt and dust (major cry!). I also like that for the booths, credit and debit cards are also accepted as I find it dangerous to bring cash in events like these.

I screenshot! #occasional snapchatter here LOL

As with rave-mates, I came with Vina, Christine, David, Mariel and Earl – thanks guys for a fun night!! We went straight from Super Sale Bazaar, and we just saw the main acts – Chvrches and Passion Pit. Aside from the music, we just got amazed by this German brand, Klopfer, which was available in the venue and will be at fests in the coming months. It’s fun party shots (16% content) contained in cool mini-bottles. I like the different flavors (I’m reminded of the Neds flavors!) and happy that I didn’t get much hangover despite the 3 boxes we consumed haha

While I’m definitely a Passion Pit fan and he got to play and slay his top songs like Take A Walk, SleepyHead, etc with his unique and high voice, I was surprised that I liked Chvrches more on stage and in their music in general. I’ve heard of them before but I really got to appreciate them more here such that I’ve been playing them on Spotify until now (my favorite is the one on Soundcloud below)

The concert featured a lot of indie (global & Filipino) artists and it’s very nice of Vybe to provide a different experience in the country. I am already looking forward to the next #GoodVybesFestival!
