Sleek Rockstar Collection

Since Q4 of 2016, I’ve been searching for very good blinding mirror highlighters – thanks to Nikki Tutorials and Jeffree Star’s influences! I would always buy these products at high-end brands but since Sleek’s best-selling Solstice palette – which ill review separately – I knew that there would lots of variations that would come in a few months.

And so, these products were launched late last year and I’ve been in love with collection ever since. Let me start with the twin of the infamous Solstice, the Cleopatra’s Kiss (PHP 850) under the highlighter family.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

Aside from the gorgeous gold mirror packaging, I really like that this has a mirror! It looks expensive and glam. It comes with powder and cream formulas which i like because I get the free hand to manipulate effects: soft and dispersed (powder), intense and mirror effect (cream + powder)

Obviously, 3 of the shades are too bronze for me so I’m definitely the Solstice girl but just check out how pigmented and opaque these are which appears mirror and packed with shine. The pink (powder) one is really a gorgeous rose pink shade which I can’t see in Solstice.  I hope they merge these two in the next palette 😉

For the department store price, this is a high-performing highlighter that I would definitely repurchase. Now, this was merged with the Rockstar collection consisting of a souffle and i-Lust palette which is just my top pick in this set and let me show you why.

Just by looking at it, I knew that it’s more of an illuminating eyeshadow palette with colors that we usually find outnumbered in most nude palettes. For me, these shades have a great role in blending and make eyes more fresh and open.

The i-LUST Palette (PHP 650) is a very affordable product that can work on both eyes and cheeks. It’s very soft and subtle (except for the copper pigment which is really opaque) with a very nice blendable formula. I actually think that the highlighters are more blinding than this one so I get to use it really on my brow and cheek bones.

Similar to the highlighters, they have cream and powder formulas with gold (yellowish), champagne, pink (leftmost is a favorite) and copper hues. I think that the latter (with peach sub hues) is very pigmented and consistent, perfect for the monochromatic eyes.

I tried all shades alone and on mixture with the other colors and they didn’t feel too heavy or shimmery which made it look glam and fresh with the right intensity.

Staying power of powder highlighters or shimmers are definitely better if layered under cream so I think that you have the freedom to customize your look with these palettes.

Lastly, the Strobing Souffle (PHP 595)! I’ve been finding strobing creams and shimmer products that would look glossy on skin (Peg: Beyonce’s eyes on her music videos). I always wondered how MUA’s would do eye looks that appear like wearing lip glosses and I think I found one that didn’t have much glitters, but provided a

I would use these alone, with feathery eyelashes!! Now I got an EOTD idea 😉

Overall, this is a collection that I really like. It’s perfect for all your strobing and glowing goddess looks regardless of the season – the strobing souffle is perfect for summer!

True Brown Lippies Hit List

When it comes to colors, I think I’ve been keeping and buying more neutrals and nudes this year, credits to the retro trend! In the process, I have made a list of lippies that aren’t like the usual “browns” that some brands claim their lipsticks to be. These are not reddish or too pinkish ones and they have attracted me most!

Below, I have 3 liquid lippies (one I have shared here before), 1 lip crayon, and 1 creamy lippy. I’m quite excited about this because it’s my first Colour Pop purchase (I’m so late but I will share more of this below), my first time to try the BYS Velvet matte lippies which are selling like pancakes!!, and of course, a product of a collab between Liz Lanuzo of Project Vanity and homegrown brand Pink Sugar.

By just looking at the tubes, the browns look “true”, meaning they’re like the wood or chocolate colors, and not mixed with reds, orange or pink. What interested me about these choices is that (same as true nudes), I can mix these with other colors of lipsticks to make them warmer. Imagine it as a base  note of a perfume =)

On arm, all of the shades seemed truly warm and brown (just differing in yellow undertone, and intensity) except for Love at First Swipe by Pink Sugar which is a peachy cocoa, sorta pinkish, but still not too much for me. Aside from colors, let me discuss some qualities one by one:

  • ColourPop Liquid in Limbo (liquid matte lipstick) [PHP 400+] – I bought this from Tupped Boutique as they said that this is the exact dupe of Kylie’s True Brown K. Indeed, everytime I wear this I always get the question “What’s your lippie?”. It’s a very unique and just-right intensity of a warm brown shade. While I’m OK with all the qualities that a Colour Pop liquid matte has except for its average longevity, obvious crinkling and flaking, this one is a color worth wearing!
  • BYS Velvet Liquid in Teddy Bare (liquid matte lipstick) {PHP 300+]* – BYS sent me this lippie for me try it and it’s one pretty brown shade! It’s less dark, yellow and intense than Colour Pop which can be worn at day. The formula is very good on my lips! It stays incredibly long, but it coats the lips which is both good and bad because 1. it gives a protective layer than which crinkles through time, and 2. it doesn’t stain the lips so it’s just sits on top, with the intense pigments not getting through the skin, thus less dry. But I’m definitely good with that!
  • LA Splash Lip Couture in Spellbound (liquid matte lipstick) [PHP 600] – I got this last year which I just reviewed now. Minding the qualities of LA Splash (still the most pigmented but hardest to remove!!), this one is a pretty dark brown shade. Imagine the true color of wood? This one is quite reddish than Colour Pop and all the others.
  • Pink Sugar x Project Vanity in Love At First Swipe (matte lip crayon) [PHP 399] – I wasn’t able to attend this launch so I bought from Project Vanity at #Passionflybazaar last September and
  • Shiseido Perfect Rouge in BR 757 (creamy lipstick) [PHP 1000+]* – I would never imagine this color for the brand but it’s a lustrous lighter version of Teddy Bare, quite yellow but definitely wearable at day and in combination with others. Shiseido lippies are quite understated because these are truly pigmented, creamy and non-drying!

With flash below, check out intensity and undertones of the hit list.

Below, I just wanna share the applicators of the liquid lippies featured here. I don’t like Colour Pop’s and LA SPlash actually. The rightmost kind of wand works for me and that’s from BYS (similar with Sleek)

Artist Lip Series

Last summer, MAKE UP FOR EVER introduced 4 new lippie formats that’s inspired by artistry and color – Acrylip, Lip Blush, Lip Balm and The Pro-Sculpting Pen. I have only tried Rouge Artist before from the brand. While there’s just a few colors (limited too) for the new ones, I needed to review the textures and finishes as I noticed that the brand has been expanding their lip category which such nice lippies.

Excluding the balm, the 3 new formats are truly unique and different from each other and among other brands I think. Acrylip has a very nice brush that produces an acrylic finish, astounding coverage and consistency and intense color. Pro-Sculpting Pen, while designed to contour lips with a highlighter end, has a very nice matte and softening formula and finish. And Lip Blush has a very matte and sensual finish for a nice MLBB.

DSCF8983 copy

When it comes to qualities aside from color, Pro-Sculting Pen has got to be my favorite, followed by the Lip Blush and then the Acrylip. The Pen just glides so smoothly, giving a 100% perfect matte lip.

MUFE Pro-Scultping Pen in 10

Given my dry lip, it’s just the Acrylip that’s quite drying like the Rouge Artist but the rest are formulas to consider really. MUFE’s lippies are such an understatement I think.

While the new Rouge Artist is coming up this September, I just hope MUFe releases new colors for these formats. While there are orange hue releases for Acrylip (see below) and Lip Blush, I hope there are neutral and dark shades with these level of quality.

In color, while there are just 2-4 hue selections per kind, these are wearable colors for me – even the orange one!

  • MUFE Lip Blush in 921* (approx PHP 1000) [rosewood matte]
  • MUFE Pro-Sculpting Pen in 10 (approx PHP 1300) [dark rosewood matte]
  • MUFE Acrylip Stain in 922* (approx PHP 1200) [bright fuchsia cream]
  • MUFE Acrylip Stain in 932*(approx PHP 1200) [true orange cream]

Overall, I definitely will recommend and repurchase (my Lip Pen is my second one) for those who like to explore other lippie formats that are less drying but without the color and quality compromise. I hope they add new colors soon!

King Kylie-Inspired Pink Sugar Lippies Below P400

Since the blog relaunch this year, my first entry, A Review of Kylie Lip Kit Dupes has been getting views like crazy, and it’s because her line has truly become iconic – outstanding colors, skin-loving tones, and retro matte finish. I’ve ordered one unique already (I’m still waiting for that and stay tuned for the review!) but one of the highly-quality yet affordable homegrown makeup brand, Pink Sugar, just released new colors under two great lines – Lip Tint and Matte Lipstick – that’s inspired by earth tones and hues that don’t just look like King Jenner’s colors – all desaturated, dusty brownish hues –   but suit the Filipina skin tone as well.

I swatched all of the products sent to me for review and it was such an easy task because I love their lippies, especially the Lip & Cheek Tints. But also let me share how great their matte lipsticks are featuring two new shades (2 leftmost shades) that I think are very close Candy K (dusty rose) dupes.

sugar 1

Pardon my dry lips, girls, (blame the coffee!) but take a closer look at how beautiful the hues are and their matte texture despite the condition. As with their creamy (I would prefer this to describe it) matte lippies and retro matte tints also, they’re buildable and pigmented in one swipe. The consistency is outstanding (except for the darkest and lightest shades which are quite observable as well in other brands). The tint may seem a little less liquid – more cream – in texture but the overall effect is the same. And oh, the scent!! – fruity and sweet, just like Pink Sugar.

Pink Sugar  Lip & Cheek Tint (matte lip cream) [PHP 350]* – My favorite hue is Queen Bee, a dark dusty rose-red that I’ve been recommending to friends. I’m repurchasing one soon because it will get emptied I think next week haha. My skin tone just brightens with it and it can be worn with dramatic eye makeup. Second favorite is Code red which is a bright warm red which looks nice on me as well. Next would be Honey Bunny which I think is a light 70’s brown that’s a Dolce K dupe (I’ve been finding one!!).

Pink Sugar  Matte Lipstick (creamy – matte lippy) [ PHP 399]* – This one might be more expensive but the tube lasts longer and the two shades are definitely favorites. XOXO is more pink than Girl Next Door but both are in same intensity and dusty rose tones which i like for my looks lately.

I just want to say that I’m so proud of this brand and new colors. I’ve been wishing they’d have less bright colors for their lipsticks and tadahhh!, my wish came true. Good job, Pink Sugar and will definitely watch out for new launches!

What do you think of these swatches? I wouldn’t use filters na for my reviews so these are exactly taken from my camera – except for the ones with blur’s and texts.

New Tester Series!

While in La Union to spend a short unplanned vacay, I thought that travel sizes / testers / mini’s that we always get from the counters, events, special gift packs or Sample Room, are great tools for quick reviews of full-sized products. With the amount of cosmetics and toiletries that I study, I think that I’ll be placing some of the skin care products that are new/share-worthy/my-fav’s in this series, especially that I use and try to test some of them whenever I escape from the city. Below is my first list (focusing on toiletries) with my thoughts and impressions:

  1. NIVEA Soft – This is a classic favorite of mine. I usually always bring my NIVEA Creme tin for skin emergencies (dry skin, rashes, shaving mistakes) but the soft version is a lighter one that can be used especially at day or under the sun.
  2. Belo Sun Expert Body Shield SPF 60+++ * – This is currently being sampled in Sample Room (full-size!!! yey!!) alongside the Perfecting Shield Tinted Sunscreen SPF 50 PA+++. I like that both have broad spectrum for sun protection and don’t feel heavy or give a white cast. Also, it’s good to know that it is infused with Cell Protect® Technology that strengthens the skin’s defense system, maintaining healthy skin while
preventing accelerated premature skin aging. The tinted sunscreen has a good consistency and adapts to skin tone (a bit pinkish though so it would be better for coller tones) but can be layered with foundation – I combine with warmer one. Get your samples in this link (VIP* customers can now avail of 1000pts for only P649 (from P799)
  3. Burt’s Bees Honey & Milk Body Lotion – I always put thicker lotions at night in religious amount to make sure skin’s nourished in the moirning after. This one is almost 100% natural and of course, all the benefits of honey to the body skin.
  4. Perfume Pod* – This is my travel staple because I can transfer the content of my favorite perfumes ( usually the ones with bonggang packaging e.g. Marc Jacobs Dot). It has been around but it will be massively  launched with colors and variants. Stay tuned!

  1. Etude House Sunprise SPF 50 PA+++ for Face – This is non-greasy, and watery-like with a good level of sun protection. It has a floral-fruity scent (hint of sunblock smell), that comes from the ingredients like Aloe Vera and Acai Berry to name a few, which also improve skin defense.
  2. Etude House Lettuce & Cucumber – This has 20% cucumber water which is a great calming toner/water for the summer.
  3. Laneige Moisturizers – Very light-weight and deeply moisturizing. I got the gift set few years ago and I really like their moisture lines.
  4. Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream – Prior to concealer application, i use this non-greasy eye cream to prep and refresh/energize my eyes.
  5. Bobbi Brown Instant Long-Wear Makeup Remover – Just like water but potent as oil especially when removing long-wearing products that we always use at the beach =)
  6. Burt’s Bees Lip Balm (Honey)* – One of my top balm choices. Check this post for full review.
  7. NARS skin Luminous Moisture – I am loving NARS’ skin care lately (I just finished the partner toner in full-size which I bought year ago). This one delivers as well with its non-greasy, long-lasting moisture with NARS exclusive Light Reflecting Complex™: wild thyme, beech bud extract, plankton extract, and sophora root extract work in synergy with hyaluronic acid and monoi oil, which immediately moisturize the skin, soothing and comforting dryness on contact.
  8. Philosophy Purity*This cleanser is a wonder!! I don’t know how to explain it but instantly after every wash (doesn’t foam too much), the skin is extra soft and smooth! I just finished the full size of this and it’s one thing I will repurchase because it just melts everything without being really harsh on skin.
  9. Skin Medica Ultra Sheer Moisturizer* – My other clinical moisturizer recommended by Dra. talens of Skin Philosophie

Different Liquid Lippies Below P1000

By definition, liquid lipsticks are more concentrated versions of the normal tube of pigment we’ve known to wear. The past years, we’ve been introduced to a couple of products (globally and now aggressively in the local industry) in this format that promises the most matte, no-fuss, no-transfer kinds but for me, liquid lippies are still defined by their level of pigmentation – whether matte or demi-matte, whether liquid, tints, creams… Most of them are priced higher than the usual because of the pigment present, but in this review, I will be sharing a list that’s below PHP 1000, with different finishes, textures and qualities you can choose from!

Last year, these lippie launches kind of piled up in my kit and I just got the time – thank God!! – to really study them. I have lots of colors but I wanna use the same hues (pink and nudes), so we can focus on the other qualities of the following brands: Ofra, Pink Sugar, Sleek, LA Splash, Happy Skin, Etude House and Khroma.

Let’s start with the applicator wands! Aside from the formula which I’ll discuss below, in this kind of lippie, the applicator has some say on the consistency and ease of use of the product. You can evaluate these easily based on the lip swatches below (not the arm swatch because we don’t apply on a flat surface!). So Sleek wins here with a squared tip that shaped and volumized my lips so much (no lip liner used there). However,  I don’t like too long and slim ones because especially with quick-drying lippies, it’s so hard to control, perfect quickly and transfer the content (you’ll send up building so much). The pear-shaped ones though: they get so much of the product and deliver in excess especially on the lip line and I can’t really shape my small lips . In this case, notice how Pink Sugar, Ofra and LA Splash have thick, compact and flexible tips.

So let’s get to the pigmentation, consistency, colors, and prices (including long-wearing aspects  – proofs of which you’ll see at the end) using only the nude and pink colors from the brands.

liquid lippy 5

  • Pink Sugar Lip & Cheek Tint (matte liquid lippie) [PHP 350]* – This is best product line under the local brand since they launched last year. The formula of this product is soooo luxurious: light-weight yet super pigmented and consistent, extra-matte (powder finish and truly opaque!), and doesn’t dry and cake the lips! I’ved tried wearing it for 3 consecutive days, and no drying at all which is unbelievable for this kind of matte – thanks to coconut oil, aloe vera, and vitamins A, C, and E. Texture is like cream-powder so it takes around 2-3 swipes to perfect it but achievable, and is build-able too despite its matte finish. Definitely winning at these aspects, I just wish they could release nude colors as most of the pinks and brights I swatched here appear kind of neon and too intense. My favorites are the unique and wearable purple’s: Purple Pleasure and Pink Paradise! And can i say – the most affordable in this list!! Lasts also for a long time, but quite difficult to remove (use oil-based remover to get rid of stain). Available at BeautyMNL.
  • Sleek Matte Me Liquid Lipsticks (matte liquid lippie) [PHP 450]* – The ultra-smooth and soft lippie in 6 shades! Look at how volumized, defined, soft yet pigmented my lip swatch is. With varied colors, this is my everyday liquid lippy indeed especially with its price! I like the ultra-smooth and extra-light feel and texture despite the pigmentation. My sample is a Kylie Lip Kit (muted rose brown) color and it still showed my natural lips despite the 2 coats. I also like how this can be built even when it’s dry!! Staying power is good for 4-5 hours and it doesn’t stain the lips which can be cleansed easily. Available at Zalora.
  • Ofra Long Lasting Liquid Liptick (matte liquid lippie) [PHP 950] – Quite borderline the P1000 limit but this product is winning in color choices and its unique creamy (yet non-sticky) matte formula. The consistency and feel (soft) are very recommendable too, and it doesn’t dry easily so you can build depending on how thick you want it to be.  Available at GlamourBox.
  • KhromaBeauty Joystick Lip Lacquer (semi-matte lacquer)[PHP 630]*- While packaged as stick, I consider this a liquid lippie because of how soft the content is. This is a brand by Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashan and as with all the K lippies, they boast of consistency, pigmentation and feel. There are just a few colors but I bet that the good formulas and signature colors are the reasons people are buying these. Can attest to those! Available at TravelMerchant16.
  • Etude House Color in Liquid Lips (creamy liquid lippie) [PHP 500]* – I super like how this liquid lippy is so natural-looking for a cushiony-water sliding texture! Korean brand definitely focuses on the texture and feel of the product – like a lip gloss- but not sticky and drying despite the level of pigment (Thanks to sweet almond oil and sunflower seed oil). Quite lacking in consistency and staying power, but if you like a sheer, hydrated-looking plumping effect too, go for this!
  • Happy Skin Shut Up & Kiss Me Lip & Cheek Tint/Power Pout (creamy liquid lippie) [PHP 699]* – This is the winner in the cream liquid lippie formula, as with the famous pen lippies of the brand. The formula is so rich but it doesn’t feel too thick and doesn’t dry the lips. Consistency is at the top of the charts, with colors so wearable and enduring enough, for the Filipina tones. It’s just so easy to glide and perfect the application with the kind of formula it has, but I would wish for a better applicator so I don’t have to use a liner. But two thumbs up as always! Available at Happy Skin Online Store.
  • LA Splash Lip Couture, Lip Smitten Mousse, Studio Shine, Velvet Matte Liquid Lipsticks (matte liquid lippies)[PHP 600] – This brand kind of created different lines under their liquid lippyy category which because so famous with bold and couture colors. I will discuss in detail in the next post, but my favorites in terms of formula and finish are the Lip Smitten Mousse and Studion Shine as they’re better in consistency and feel than the others. Generally, the best in pigmentation, variety and uniqueness of colors, but the downside is that these lippies require enough time to practice how you will apply (as they dry quickly on the lips) and maintain (feel is quite thick and finish is tricky as some feather when too thick or retouched). Not really recommendable for every day use but staying power is very good if not ruined by oily, and it can only be removed completely by oil-based makeup remover. No drying effect as it tints the lips superficially which is impressive. Available at DTC Online.
  • NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream (sheer matte liquid lippie) [PHP200-300] – This is actually my first liquid lippy that I reviewed in the past blog, and while I haven’t tried the other bolder colors, this is definitely the choice for a sheer matte finish. While consistency, staying power and pigmentation are not so perfect, go for this for the finish!

In terms of durability and staining, refer to the above visual where I tried to scratch/remove the pigments using just my fingers and a non-oil based makeup wipe (lower). I also tried if these stained and stayed even after some makeup removers and the results are below. Completely, these are erased when you us oil-based removers.

So many choices for finish, texture and colros indeed for liquid lipsticks below P1000. What are your bets?

6 Lipsticks for Couture

I think that these will be the most outrageous set of lippes that I will show you before I end the lipstick week (2 more posts coming up). For sure, these will stay a bit longer at my kit than the other lippies because I can’t wear them regularly/daily (as they’re super pigmented too!!) or on normal work days. But maybe in Break My Spell? Or when I feel outrageous? Special parties/fashion shows? Or when I just feel like creative or moody at night outs (Yes)!! I’ve had crazy bright colored lippies before but these are different because these are even way beyond the black lippies that I’ve published here.

I like outrageous colors that are true to the tube. Swatching them on my arms, they give and deliver the intensity, consistency and pigmentation especially for standout brand LA Splash, which is known for these kinds of colors.

outrage 9

I selected darker and muted shades blue, blue-violet, purple and green. Blue and green are my favorite colors and I’ve seen lots of Instagrammers wear this for their creative LOTD’s. One coming up soon! There’s also a gray one! Let’s check them out!

IMG_8383 copy

  • LA Splash in Nagini (matte liquid lipstick) [PHP 600] – Emerald green lippie I purchased from LA Splash online a few months ago when they launched Harry Potter lippies. My favorite in this list! I saw Saab Magalona wear it in her gigs and it looks so great at night – deep, expressive, flat-out phenomenal. The matte finish and pigment and staying power are of course commendable as with any Lip Smitten Mousse formula (review of texture soon)
  • LA Splash  in Bellatrix (matte liquid lipstick) [PHP 600] – Blue-violet! Looks not so good on my tone – maybe Sirius which is a navy blue color will suit me more –  but hey, the color is so unique!
  • Limecrime Velvetines in Trouble (matte liquid lipstick) [PHP 1200] – Army green lippie that I bought from Tupped Boutique.  This color gives me life and strength! I’ve been in love with this color ever since it got so popular last year and I think i’ll wear this whenever I feel like I Run The World or Katy Perry’s Part of Me LOL. I known a bit about the ethical issues and of course I’m against overpricing and bad management. And of course, I find a dupe to this color, I will have to get this asap. Also, as with any super pigmented and outrageous colors in lippie (e.g. this brand, LA Splash), be prepared to know their ingredients. Don’t also wear them everyday.
  • Pink Sugar in Royals (matte lipstick) [PHP 399]* – Warm purple. This is the most affordable and wearable in the list YAY. I can compare this to MAC’s Heroine bit this is warmer and better for my tone . Yes for pigmentation but a bit lacking on consistency but I like this color!!
  • MAC in Gunner (matte lipstick) [PHP 1100] –  Violet. Like real violet – not purple or reddish. MAC Gunner was part of the Ultimate Matte collection and while this color is not  for my warm tone, I need to have this in my collection! among the other matte lippies, this is a bit lacking in consistency as you can see it  break on my lips.
  • LA Splash  in Ghoulish (matte liquid lipstick) [PHP 600] – Gray lippy!! This Lip Couture color is so nice but when I applied it on my lips, I just looked so pale and it highlighted my upper lip shadows. As with any gray color, it’s a bit tricky to use because it may make you look dull and darker than the normal. In terms of texture, i like Lip Mousse formats from the brand that the ones from Lip Couture.

I’m just excited to showcase these all in my LOTD’s! What are you favorites from this list?

Are You Wearing The Right Red Lippie?

I am not really a fan of reds, and as I’m writing the pictures I photograph-ed, I’m slowly discovering the shades that I like and that suit my warm skin tone. When I started beauty blogging, one of my first topics was differentiating warm colors and let me me refresh you again in this new blog! Plus, you’ll get to know more about the red lipstick that I own (and the ones that will go to my makeup graveyard!)

It was really a long day of taking pictures of my lips and wearing all kinds of reds that I have in my kit. These are actually minimized already but I love that I’m getting to know them more (the ones that fit me, the ones that are dupes and can actually go to my sister/mother/friend, etc) by swatching them on my arms and lips, especially the latter. Take this as an example when you’re buying and testing lippies: make sure you wear them. This would help you save some lippie purchases! Let’s start with my cool reds:

They’re actually fewer than my warm red lippies so this is a good start. Now, cool colors are usually the blue shades and in terms of the red lippie, cool ones or blue-based mean they’re more pink and less orange. Even under warm light like sunlight (which is a good test of a pigment’s real color and undertone), the swatches on my arm don’t have any yellow hint in their shades.

cool day

Most of these shades will definitely now go as “pamana” to my friends and relatives because blue-based lippies just don’t work on me. If these work for you (you would know you’re cool toned when silver/platinum suits you, and when you have blue veins), nonetheless, these are fantastic shades with excellent pigmentation. However, I wouldn’t really wear these because they make me look “darker” and dull, except for the ff:

  • MAC in Ruby Woo (matte lipstick) [PHP 1000] – MAC describes this as a “classic  cool red” lippie that made the brand famous. On my skin tone, it’s quite neutral so I considered it on the warm swatches too as benchmark. This is the famous lippie of Yaya Dub, but when you’re considering buying this, make sure you wear and try it on because it looks good on some and but not to all. I’ve had this for years and while it’s a really fabulous shade – I’m always reminded of cool-toned Rihanna whenever I wear this – I can only wear and slay it whenever I mix it  a bit with more orange colors (e.g. my favorite red-orange, Lady Danger as I reviewed here) or when the light is warm and bright (see how it is a bit warm and neutral on my arm and lips). This is more warm though than the famous Russian Red and the “Pure Ruby” which an affordable dupe from L’Oreal Paris.
  • L’Oreal in Pure Garnet (matte lipstick) [PHP 400 ] – For its price, pigmentation and consistency, I like this set of collection from L’Oreal Paris. Pure Garnet is a very nice deep wine shade that is like MAC Diva. While they’re both drying to the lips, the latter is more matte but when you’re considering just color, this can be a perfect dupe to that nice wearable blue red color that also lasts for around 4-5 hours.
  • MAC in Frank N’ Furter (LE matte lipstick) [PHP 1100] This is actually the most warm or neutral in this set despite a slightly cool under tone, and I’m keeping this brick red shade (I changed my mind!!) because also, packaging! It’s more warm and less dark than Sin which I didn’t consider here because it’s more of a black red.
  • Guerlain Rouge G in Gigolo (cream/satin lipstick) [PHP 2000+]* – Aside from the fantabulous packaging of this product line, I like this  deep cool true wine shade from the recent launch of lippies two years ago. Nonetheless, the formula is too pigmented + it’s just so easy to transfer anywhere + quite drying too. But I’ll keep this for the shade.

cool night

Now, below are my shades of red! Some are very similar shades (I collected a few haha) and let me break it down for you:

Warm reds are definitely yellow or more orange especially under warm light. These definitely suit me and I’m keeping all, except for around 2:

warm day

In order of the most orangey and lightest:

  • Inglot in 09 (satin/cream lip color) [PHP approx 700]* – Inglot lippies are quite drying to me, but I can’t deny the pigmentation, intensity, and consistency of the lip products.
  • Laura Mercier Paint Wash in Vermillion Red (demi-matte liquid lipstick) [PHP 1260]* – This was recently launched last year, and I must say that this is one of the most luxurious formula in liquid lippy. Will discuss this in another post, but i love the strength, comfort and feel of this product.
  • Bobbi Brown Creamy Matte in Heart (demi-matte lipstick) [PHP 1500] – This is one of my favorite demi-matte formulas as reviewed here.
  • Bobbi Brown Art Stick in Harlow Red (demi-matte lip crayon) [PHP 1500]* – This is the latest release of Bobbi for lip color format and is just the perfect lip liner + pigmented lippie! It has 6 oils in it which makes it non drying and the consistency is also very nice. This color is described by Bobbi as a “true bright red”
  • Happy Skin in Mistletoe Red (satin/cream lipstick) [PHP 995]* – I really like how versatile this shade is. Notice that under warm light, it’s too yellow and bright, but when under flash, it has a nice level of darkness/boldness. As always, Happy Skin’s formula is at the top of the charts.
  • NARS in Mandore (satin lip crayon) [PHP approx 1200]* – This shade is a muted warm (kinda neutral) red that is glides smoothly on the lips. Creamy consistency and pigmentation are excellent, and doesn’t dry the lips too much. I love NARS’ formulas!
  • MAC in Viva Glam I (matte lipstick) [PHP 1000] – One kind of brick/brown vintage red that I can wear whether day or night! Definitely a favorite and I’ve been stocking on this because a friend I just told about this said that it’s out of stock in some stores.
  • Pink Sugar in Diva  (matte lipstick) [PHP 349]* – The most affordable in this list that I really recommend to everyone with a great matte finish, consistency and feel (soft and silky). Staying power is Ok but I like how this brand competes for me in this list1 While this may be a great dupe for Diva (MAC) because of its name, i think I have found an affordable dupe for Viva Glam I!!!
  • Inglot in 297 (satin lipstick) [approx PHP 700]* – As reviewed here.

warm night

So, quite a long list but I was very happy doing this1 Now, what warm or cool red shades do you own?

  • *sent by friends from brands
  • **lip swatches are blurred and photographed with flash (so they will appear less matte than arm swatches)

A Review of Whitening Lotions

Scratch that title – it sounds like a thesis paper! LOL But ever since I started shaving (which as we all know, damages skin) a decade ago, I decided that i needed to maintain and take care my bodily skin, which is actually the largest organ, so I was quite familiar with a lot of body care products in the market. I selected Whitening Brightening options for this purpose because almost all of them have good and healthy ingredients that target uneven skin tone and spots (I don’t like to change the color of my skin though). And while some of these can do whitening really, I will be discussing more about their texture, feel, consistency, ingredients and targeted uses for me, which may help you achieve healthier and glowing skin which for me is more essential.

Leading whitening lotions in the market

The whitening body care market in the Philippines is very big – you can notice how they’re displayed and stocked at stores – with a lot of options, from both local and global brands. These were sent mostly by Sample Room. So, here’s the list of whitening lotions (almost all with SPF20-30 which is a plus!) that interested me and my reviews/swatches below:

  • Vaseline Healthy White Instant Fair Lotion(P110 – 100ml)
  • Vaseline Healthy White Serum SPF 30 PA++ (P220 – 180ml)
  • NIVEA UV Whitening Serum SPF 25 PA++ (P219 – 200ml)
  • Jergens Skin Lightening Lotion (P79 – 100 ml)
  • Belo Intensive Whitening Cream SPF 30  (P199 – 150ml)
  • Silka Premium Whitening Lotion SPF 30(P98 – 100 ml)
  • SkinWhite Advanced Whitening Lotion SPF 20  (P123 – 100ml)

Now, instead of comparing them all to each other because i think that they have strengths and weaknesses depending on one’s needs, let me break it down for you like this:

EVERYDAY LOTION ( A Win on Consistency and Texture)

I like lotions that do not feel heavy and sticky especially because I wear jeans almost everyday. With great textures too, these are the ones that I use whenever I shave or have skin impurities because they aren’t thick (no clogging) and skin is moisturised deeply:

  • Jergens Skin Lightening Lotion – Except that it doesn’t have SPF, the texture and feel are great. It is easy to spread and dries quickly too! The scent is not too much and the effect is refreshed and luminous especially with the new HYDRALUCENCE formula injected by Jergens. See arm swatch above.
  • NIVEA Extra White Body Lotion – This has been a favorite for years. NIVEA creams and formulas (blue tin included), in general, just suit my skin and are my rescue products when I have bad skin days (impurities included like itchy skin). I just don’t have a swatch of this one as I switched to the Serum (you’ll know below), but especially because of own’s skin ingredient Q10 and innovative CamuCamu (90% more powerful than Vitamin C in lightening).
  • NIVEA In-Shower Whitening Skin Conditioner – Since its launch locally in The Philippines – I have tried the fantastic product prior to this – I have loved how it preps my skin at shower which makes leave-on lotion application easier and deeper for my skin.
  • Silka Premium Whitening Lotion SPF 30 – I am talking about the Green Papaya variant which just smells so good! It has papaya enzymes known to lighten and exfoliate skin, with one of my favorite ingredients: milk, honey and olive oil! I just don’t like how difficult it is to blend to the skin and how thick it is at first, but once it’s dried, I noticed that it has a locked-in moisture on the body which is very recommendable.

LOVE FOR BODY SERUMS (Power and Innovative Feel)

This product type started 2 years ago with NIVEA and I really like using serums for the face. Why not for the body?

  • NIVEA UV Whitening Serum SPF 25 PA++ – Almost like water (see below swatch)! Despite how it is called a serum (with powerful ingredients and all for dull and damaged skin), this is the best formula for me because it blends well with the skin and dries quickly too. I use this at day, but more at night after shower so i can really repair the skin, especially because of patented moisturizing Hydra-IQ formula, 96% pure Vit. C derivatives, Licorice (a super nice natural whitening ingredient), Red Seaweed, giving a nice fruity-floral scent too.
  • Vaseline Healthy White Serum SPF 30 PA++ – This product promises “extra protection to lighten skin evenly, even under the sun”. I see this product marketed just like a sunblock but I don’t see it like that really especially when going to the beach where I would recommend around SPF 45-50. The SPF level is recommendable indeed for daily use (I recommend if you will have 4-5 hours of outdoor exposure) and the feel, texture and scent is lighter than a sunblock (+no white cast despite the sunscreen level which is the hightest in this list!), with lightening property promised to be delivered by Vitamin B3.

Fluidy & Water-Like Texture of NIVEA UV Whitening Serum

JUST LIKE MAKE-UP/PRIMERS (“Instant” Whitening)

There has been an increase in popularity of instant brighteners with cosmetic ingredients to make skin look white/fair/even. I like using these on special occasions (body care is truly becoming like face care!)

  • Vaseline Healthy White Instant Fair Lotion – I got so intrigued by this product and it indeed lightens on a cosmetic level (I can consider this like a makeup primer -well, i really put foundation/BB cream on my legs sometimes). See swatches below where skin appears brighter, more pink, and even under light.  The main ingredients of this product are “Microreflectors” that allow for instant fairer skin, together with Vit B3 and sunscreens. This quickly dries too and isn’t hard to blend. No white cast as well!
  • SkinWhite Advanced Power Whitening Lotion SPF 20 –  I have tried this brand a long time ago and this slightly whitened my skin before, despite not liking its stickiness. Now, it promises to “fight Skin aging and achieve noticeably whiter skin instantly upon application.”It is said to use an exclusive Advanced Tripower Technology that “whitens instantly and whitens continuously”. I actually noticed upon swatching that it has an instant whitening effect especially under light and just basing on the look, it’s because it is a bit shimmery and white-pigmented (cosmetic). I like Vaseline more under this category because it gives me a more pinkish/healthy glow but I would consider the other Skin White variant for the above uses: Glutathione +  Vitamin C (from Lemon, orange, etc which you can notice from the scent) which has more healthy ingredients.

For this purpose, I really look at the ingredients and I apply the products on targeted areas of the skin where there are visible unevenness and darkening. I like the Belo products under this category because the ingredients are truly powerful – just the like the ones my dermatologists use for brightening my face after facials and pricking!

  • Belo Intensive Whitening Cream SPF 30 – This is the most expensive on the list even on its 220ml level, but I think that’s because of the Kojic Acid (proven to inhibit melanin production) and Tranexamic Acid (lightens stubborn dark spots that dont respond to other ingredients) combo present in the body cream. I use it on targeted areas and days after I shave as treatment.
