Artist Lip Series

Last summer, MAKE UP FOR EVER introduced 4 new lippie formats that’s inspired by artistry and color – Acrylip, Lip Blush, Lip Balm and The Pro-Sculpting Pen. I have only tried Rouge Artist before from the brand. While there’s just a few colors (limited too) for the new ones, I needed to review the textures and finishes as I noticed that the brand has been expanding their lip category which such nice lippies.

mufelip21

Excluding the balm, the 3 new formats are truly unique and different from each other and among other brands I think. Acrylip has a very nice brush that produces an acrylic finish, astounding coverage and consistency and intense color. Pro-Sculpting Pen, while designed to contour lips with a highlighter end, has a very nice matte and softening formula and finish. And Lip Blush has a very matte and sensual finish for a nice MLBB.

DSCF8983 copy

When it comes to qualities aside from color, Pro-Sculting Pen has got to be my favorite, followed by the Lip Blush and then the Acrylip. The Pen just glides so smoothly, giving a 100% perfect matte lip.

mufelip20

MUFE Pro-Scultping Pen in 10

Given my dry lip, it’s just the Acrylip that’s quite drying like the Rouge Artist but the rest are formulas to consider really. MUFE’s lippies are such an understatement I think.

While the new Rouge Artist is coming up this September, I just hope MUFe releases new colors for these formats. While there are orange hue releases for Acrylip (see below) and Lip Blush, I hope there are neutral and dark shades with these level of quality.

mufelip11

In color, while there are just 2-4 hue selections per kind, these are wearable colors for me – even the orange one!

  • MUFE Lip Blush in 921* (approx PHP 1000) [rosewood matte]
  • MUFE Pro-Sculpting Pen in 10 (approx PHP 1300) [dark rosewood matte]
  • MUFE Acrylip Stain in 922* (approx PHP 1200) [bright fuchsia cream]
  • MUFE Acrylip Stain in 932*(approx PHP 1200) [true orange cream]

mfelip12

Overall, I definitely will recommend and repurchase (my Lip Pen is my second one) for those who like to explore other lippie formats that are less drying but without the color and quality compromise. I hope they add new colors soon!

#MACAVAF

I had the most festive weekend at Cebu with MAC Cosmetics as they opened their newest counter in SM Seaside City Cebu. It was truly the biggest fiesta of the season with high-energy performers, extravagant models, masquerade masks, thrilling DJ’s and live body art. I have always liked how MAC launches new collections and stores because it really shows who they are – Astounding, Vital, Audacious and Fantastic indeed – and what their cosmetics are for really. And you know how I love losing myself in stunning creativity and chaos!

It was a jam-packed event with press, celebrities and their loyal customers. It was also the perfect time for the brand to launch their new collections to Cebuanos – see some below. The new counter in the 2nd floor has a very colorful retail design that you should check out, while the activation in Mountain Wing Atrium will still be there this week so visit it if you’re there!

More photos of the event below. Check out also my Youtube video about this trip very soon, and my MAC Technique experience as well.

A Show-Stopping Artistry

Color goes hand in hand with personality, like an artist and their performance. While makeup artists need a wide range of colors to meet the creative and artistic needs of the stage, each one is also looking for his or her iconic shade. Each artist searches for the color that will reveal his or her own singularity. And now the palette and choices are endless… with new ingenuity and intense color.

“Lipstick is to makeup what the last brush stroke is to painting… the ultimate, perfectly contained touch of color that completes the work of art. And just like in art, makeup artists need an infinite palette of colors. This is why I have developed such a wide range of new ARTIST ROUGE lipsticks, I always want to give makeup artists a profusion of shades and textures to sublimate and create their perfect piece of art.” – Dany Sanz, Founder & Artistic Director of MAKE UP FOR EVER

I am a complete fan of MAKEUP FOR EVER pigments and the Iconic Swedish Duo Icona Pop ever since they started in 2009 so when I saw online that there will be a collab, I told myself I need to get a pair of lippies! My first love for them started with the below video wherein they showcased The House artists and performers (including gay and transgender ones) who just have so much love for their work, performance and passion.

The Swedish group ICONA POP, formed by Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo, takes its inspiration from electro house, punk and indie pop music. The two singers, who shot to international stardom with their 3x RIAA certified platinum hit “I Love It” ft. Charli XCX, and opened for Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and One Direction on their respective tours. Returning to the center stage with their 2015 single “Emergency“, the duo joins forces with MAKE UP FOR EVER in all their artistic creations and stage performances, in collaboration with the band’s makeup artist Colby Smith.

“Makeup is so important for us when we are on stage, to do something fun for people. You can become a superwoman with just some blush and a black lipstick. We express ourselves through music — but also through how we dress and how we wear our makeup. MAKE UP FOR EVER is perfect for us because it’s edgy and cool — plus there are so many different colors to play with!” – Icona Pop

Moi in C603 – a universal blue shade

In the event held at The Brewery at The Palace, we got the chance to preview this show-stopping collection. It got really intense for me and my beauty friends because it was a lot of swatching on the lips and arms but I was so happy I was able to find some shades for me.

I know Artist Roufe by MAKE UP FOR EVER and this formula I must say, has gotten better. I’m hands down to the brand’s pigment and wear, but the new collection has better texture and wear as it has novel complex waxes from Mallow and Macadamia.

Processed with VSCO with p5 preset

The shades are divided into two: C (cream) and M (matte) on their tubes. Regardless of finish, the texture and feel is thinner and more satin compared to their other lippies.

Processed with VSCO with p5 preset

I spotted some very nice MLBB shades, dark hues (there’s black and blue!), and bright pastel ones!

Processed with VSCO with p5 preset

MAKE UP FOR EVER said that the color pigments are grinded three times, reducing and streamlining their size. Because of the identical, micro-fine pigments, the intensity of light reflection and the radiance of color are heightened and the color impact on lips is very powerful and immediate.

Processed with VSCO with p5 preset

Truly, just with one swipe, the color pay-off is outstanding! Consistency and coverage is just top of the charts.

FSL-ARTISTROUGE2016

I am just so excited for this collection which will be available September 15, 2016 in the Philippines. Each lipstick retails at P1250, and I think it’s worth that with such performing products and high-precision bullet design of the packaging.

Gender-Free Makeup Line + Trolls!

It’s not that unimaginable for a modern cosmetics brand that launched Viva Glam with various LGBT personalities, to create a unisex makeup in collaboration with the Brant Brothers that I’ve been following on IG because of their parties and modern style.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

Sons of model Stephanie Seymour, the dapper boys-about-town Harry and Peter Brant collaborate on a collection of modern-day grooming and sculpting products for men and women. Neutral hues for eyes, understated, long-wearing lipstains, brow products and new Pro Sculpting Cream Duo add effortless definition to the face. Special packaging featuring their signatures in matte black on glossy black. Exclusively online, skincare products with universal appeal include Mineralize Volcanic Ash Exfoliator, Mineralize Charged Water Moisture Gel and Mineralize Charged Water Moisture Eye Cream.MAC_ProjectBrothers_LINEUP_300

I really like the modern matte black on glossy BG packaging of this collection. I’m really eyeing on those contour brushes and kit! for guys, i think you should see the clear eyebrow set! Anyway, had fun watching how they prepared for a party in this video!

Available also this August among the 3 other color collections in Manila: Goodluck Trolls! OMG I collected these when I was a kid. Growing up in the 90’s, I had played the dolls for a long time. Now MAC has a lucky charm with crazy colors and products with packaging so glamorous and cool!

OK, I like that 187 face brush (P3250), all the reflects glitters (P1300), the Play it Proper soft pink with sparkles beauty powders (P1870) and that Midnight troll rich blue (matte) lippie (P1150). UGHHH

90’s Matte Browns

Growing up in the 90’s, I didn’t know so much about makeup but one thing’s for sure, I really like this decade – from video games, pop music and even the color hues that I still really lock up in my mind until now.

mny brown 3

Desaturated colors and neutral ones were a hit back then and apparently until now, with the famous nude shades we buy now. But I am really happy that local and international department store brands are recognizing these and offering them at affordable prices.

I got 3 new shades of the new Maybelline Creamy Matte/Mat lipsticks. I was not a fan of this format back then (I reviewed some at Break My Spell) when matte lipsticks started to gain popularity BUT OMFG with these new ones in terms of consistency, texture, coverage and color choices.

mny brown5

Now these matte lipsticks are called Creamy Matte’s and I definitely agree with the label. They look and feel semi-matte. It’s easy to apply and doesn’t feel so dry. The consistency is outstanding with very minimal spaces.

mny brown2

There are 5 shades from the new collection and I think all are sophisticated, bold and perfect for the season. I like brown shades in my collection too because I can combine them with some colors to make it desaturated, but below are my two favorites.

Staying power might be a little weak but for the low price yet level of consistency and coverage, retouches won’t hurt. It might be a little drying after around 5-6 hours so lip balms should be applied before retouching.

mny brown1

With flash, you can see how almost perfect the consistency is, with just 1-2 coats. With regard to color,

Maybelline Matte Lipstick* (PHP 299) – Clay Crush is a orangey neutral nude, Nude Nuance is a nice red-brown shade wile Burgundy Crush is a cool deep dark red.

mny brown 4

The shades look perfect for smokey eyes in my opinion because these might look dull on a blank face. Burgundy Crush is a very good dupe of one highly pigmented lippie that I purchased last year, and Nude Nuance (right) is a flattering warm shade.

The best part? It’s only P299. Overall, I am really impressed with how Maybelline develops their lippies lately. I see you, MNY!! Will definitely recommend and repurchase.

My Wearable Pinks

poink 4

I’m not really a hard-core fan of the hue pink, but I realized how it has been making my eyes more feminine, especially the rose and warm pink eyeshadows. I then tried a few brands on my lips and see below for another color swatchfest!

pink11

Most of the brands here are available in department stores and that’s great. I’ve got matte to satin lippies with mostly pinks leaning towards the warmer side of the color spectrum. I think these are the kinds that are perfect #MLBB everyday lip look that doesn’t make me look cartooney or barbie.

pinks roses 2

On my arm with (below) and without (above) flash, the two darkest shades lean toward a warm fuchsia color while the middle ones have more brown undertones which are perfect for any skin tone.

pinks roses 1

Maybelline recently released new shades of warm dusty pinks which are banking on the neutral 80’s hue trend. I like the selection of colors especially Natural Beige and Salmon Pink.

pink1 pink 2

On my lips, we can see the other qualities of the lippies:

  • Pink Sugar in Hotline Bling (matte lipstick) [approx PHP 300]* – this is just a very pigmented lippie from one of my favorite department store brands. The consistency and coverage is fierce with a very good fuchsia color, and name (reminds me of one Rihanna LOTD!)
  • Maybelline Rose Matte lipsticks (matte lipstick) {approx PHP 200]* – MNY matte lippies are definitely becoming true to the “matte” and OK in terms of consistency and coverage. On my lips, it still appears a bit semi-matte/cream tho but I like how unique the faded, dusty and a brown-orangey kinds of pinks they have. Salmon Pink is my favorite wearable hue (not too nude) from this line.
  • NYX Butter Lipstick (cream lipstick) [approx PHP 300]* – This has got to be my favorite amongst all these in terms of lightweight wear and smooth texture, despite it being a cream format. Color is a bit cool for my skin tone but I like how it truly feels like butter, just with a very good consistency and coverage.
  • L’Oreal Paris Color Riche (semi-matte lipstick) [approx PHP 400]* – ever since they launched Color Riche, I’ve known L’Oreal lippies with good rosewood colors. I heard that Nymphea, a dusty rose, is a lippie used by Solenn Heusaff in her bridal makeup look. It definitely looks wearable and blooming on the lips. The brand also released an exclusive pink collection named after the L’Oreal Paris ambassadors. Blake Lively (my fav!) color is a coral shade that’s not too neon or bright. I really like how sensual and buildable these are (on 1 coat, it will look sheen)

pink5

There’s also a lip crayon line [approx PHP 500] released by Burt’s Bees recently that also attracted me. They’re described as matte, but I think they’re more creamy but with a good full-coverage. On my arm swatch I had Carolina Coast which is a dusty rose (less brown tho). Of course, I’ve always liked how 100% natural the products from the brand are, with Butter, Kendi Oil, and Jojoba Oil to keep lips smooth and moisturized.

VG Ari

Miley’s VG collection last year was phenom especially because I love her hippie style and that beautiful red-orange shade. This 2016, MAC chose Ariana Grande as its newest spokesperson for Viva Glam, a limited collection that’s launched annually/semi-annually to help the MAC Aids Fund.

MAC Lip liner and Lip conditioner to boost performance of the lipstick

When I think of Ariana, I would think of pink colors but hey, they thought of a beautiful black plum shade – which is like Ariana’s other mood: the bad girl. I shared this via Facebook late last year when I got addicted to dark-black shades and I’ve been wanting this ever since.

Few months ago, I went to the launch of the lipstick and checked it out for myself.

MAC Viva Glam Ariana Grande vs Instigator on warm sunlight

When I got a sample and went home (let’s fast forward lang), I immediately swatched it vs my only deep plum shade I bought last year, Instigator, and realized how the former is more red/burgundy than plum, which I like. It’s more vampy than berry.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

I agree that it is more cool than warm, but definitely warmer than Instigator, which I again like. I tried Instigator several times and it certainly has a makeup look that it supports on me.

In intensity, I agree that it is truly a blackened version of her favorite color which I think is purple. Ariana described below the inspiration which was the 2 moods of a girl. She first launched a plum shade for that Dangerous Woman mood (check out the last post for the other one)

In terms of texture, it’s more satin than matte to me, but eventually becomes the latter when lips become dry.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

Since I used lipliner, I achieved a full consistency on the upper lip than the lower lip. It might be a little difficult to apply it but Temptalia described it very well when she said: “streaked but also applied with a jagged edge.”. There are parts where it got very good opaque color, so it’s best to use with a lip brush and lip primer.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

But what I really liked about it is the color as I mentioned above. It is also not as drying as other matte and retro-matte lippies, and it gives a deep black opaque color as you can see being worn by the DJ when it was launched in MAC Glorietta.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

Overall, this is a shade that goes to my lip collection aside from of course, 100% of the cost of every MAC Viva Glam product is donated to the MAC AIDS Fund, which has currently raised $425 million. So get this one while they still carry it.

mac-viva-glam-ariana-grande-2

Lastly, Arianna talked about 2 moods of a girl in the video and the new color above is definitely her signature. I like that it’s a matte mauve and slightly cool pink shade, which I think we all can pull off. Such a nice choice! This will officially launch this October, retailing at P1050 at MAC stores nationwide.

How to Achieve Purple Balayage + Bleached Hair Tips

Since last year, I stuck with the Balayage style because it’s actually healthier, affordable and more manageable. Since I have a hair thinning problem, I cannot always retouch my roots. Thing is, it has always worked for me because it also gives dimension to my flat hair and helps contour my face.

But a few months ago, I got bored and I told my stylist Jake of Cedar Salon that I wanted something bold and trendy – thus the purple balayage which I plan on changing to green, blue or any that i feel like wearing. Initially, I thought of having a full rose-gold hair but my stylist just knows what treatments my hair can get and that’s really good to hear from a very optimistic person like me LOL

So let me run you through the process that started before my Boracay trip this summer to achieve the style and color I’ve really wanted now, and some tips on how you can manage it.

1. CHOOSE A BASE COLOR THAT WILL COMPLEMENT YOUR FASHION COLOR. PERFECT THE BALAYAGE STYLE THAT SUITS YOUR HAIR AND FACE

Of course, you disclose this to your salon or stylist and you consult with him/her regarding the fashion color that best suits the base, and where he would put the highlights or the lighter colors – or how we would do the Balayage – If you havent had one. Then when you aim for green, purple, pink or even blue ends, it’s always better to have a less yellow or warm base.

Jake then bleached my ends (and more in the middle section) again through his style, and painted all of my hair with their Metallic Ash color (which was launched last year) by Scharwzkopf Professional. Below are the results.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

2. MAKE THE FASHION COLOR HAPPEN

After some beach trips, I then returned to the salon last end-May to finally make this happen. I am not a super fan of the color purple but I was thinking – Psylocke! LOL – that would fade to a warm pink or a faded kind of red that will look good on me. So I did it and the I was very happy with the results.

Jake didn’t have to retouch and color all of my hair, just the middle section – which he made less yellow through ash/grey colors – and of course, the purple ends. That’s what’s nice with Balayage because it wouldn’t have to look perfect and freshly colored always and it can work with my hair’s condition. It can work with regrowth’s. Below is a diagram and it looked well coordinated/blended. That’s also a criteria when you choose your salon or stylist.

3. CARE AND TREAT YOUR BLEACHED ENDS

My roots became healthier but as with any bleached hair, it would tend to get dry, frizzy and brittle and sometimes I would experience super split ends that would even knot by themselves.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

Aside from conditioners (I like Tresemme’s Platinum Strength especially since I need to make the ends still alive after all styling and coloring) and masks, I usually just detangle every time and I like how the blue Tangle Angel brush (designed professionally by Richard Ward , a hair expert who also services Kade Middleton) just makes it easier and more productive for me.

IMG_9576

The Tangle Angel Classic is not only perfect for detangling both wet and dry hair, but also makes a great blow drying brush and is suitable for all hair types.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

There’s also this one product that I use at least once a week to protect, nourish and improve my color and my Balayage. It’s called My Amazing Color Boost + Secret Foam Rinse which is very innovative in its foam format – non sticky and greasy afterwards. Since I have super oily skin, this really works for me and it truly intensifies the dimensions of the color.

diagram2

My Amazing Color Boost+ Secret™ is the Exclusive ColorBrite™ innovation; a synergistic blend of formulated ingredients designed to enhance color, shine and vibrancy featuring Panthenol, Acai Fruit Extract and Micronized Violet. ColorBrite™ also contains Virgin Coconut Oil Hydrosol (VCOH) Technology which adds natural UV protection and enhanced conditioning properties for amazing manageability, moisturization and shinier hair.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

4. DEEPEN CONTRAST AND/OR CHANGE FASHION COLOR AT THE ENDS

I was so happy with the fading (how pastel pink it is) as all fashion colors fade. I told Jake I want to intensify the color and make the fading longer so he further bleached my ends and colored it with purple again.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

I noticed that some of my ends became elastic and white in color after the bleach. THATS WHERE YOU STOP because hair is extremely damaged already. I just thought that if Jake didn’t warn me and if he didn’t stop me from wanting a fully bleached color, I wouldn’t have some hair now LOL. Learnings!!!

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

So there! I hope you learned something about my hair journey and tips. I am now open to suggestions on what fashion color I would use on my ends next!! This time you can just use Manic Panic on ends or go back to the salon for more professional painting of the hair.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

*hair color, and products free of charge

UPDATE: ADDED BLUE for more mermaid hair x Harley Quinn realness! Jake used a different brand of color that’s more long-lasting (even after washes – mine lasted for 2-3 weeks now) which you can avail only at the salon. He used blue at the ends because it will fade faster than the purple in the middle.
