King Kylie-Inspired Pink Sugar Lippies Below P400

Since the blog relaunch this year, my first entry, A Review of Kylie Lip Kit Dupes has been getting views like crazy, and it’s because her line has truly become iconic – outstanding colors, skin-loving tones, and retro matte finish. I’ve ordered one unique already (I’m still waiting for that and stay tuned for the review!) but one of the highly-quality yet affordable homegrown makeup brand, Pink Sugar, just released new colors under two great lines – Lip Tint and Matte Lipstick – that’s inspired by earth tones and hues that don’t just look like King Jenner’s colors – all desaturated, dusty brownish hues –   but suit the Filipina skin tone as well.

I swatched all of the products sent to me for review and it was such an easy task because I love their lippies, especially the Lip & Cheek Tints. But also let me share how great their matte lipsticks are featuring two new shades (2 leftmost shades) that I think are very close Candy K (dusty rose) dupes.

sugar 1

Pardon my dry lips, girls, (blame the coffee!) but take a closer look at how beautiful the hues are and their matte texture despite the condition. As with their creamy (I would prefer this to describe it) matte lippies and retro matte tints also, they’re buildable and pigmented in one swipe. The consistency is outstanding (except for the darkest and lightest shades which are quite observable as well in other brands). The tint may seem a little less liquid – more cream – in texture but the overall effect is the same. And oh, the scent!! – fruity and sweet, just like Pink Sugar.

Pink Sugar  Lip & Cheek Tint (matte lip cream) [PHP 350]* – My favorite hue is Queen Bee, a dark dusty rose-red that I’ve been recommending to friends. I’m repurchasing one soon because it will get emptied I think next week haha. My skin tone just brightens with it and it can be worn with dramatic eye makeup. Second favorite is Code red which is a bright warm red which looks nice on me as well. Next would be Honey Bunny which I think is a light 70’s brown that’s a Dolce K dupe (I’ve been finding one!!).

Pink Sugar  Matte Lipstick (creamy – matte lippy) [ PHP 399]* – This one might be more expensive but the tube lasts longer and the two shades are definitely favorites. XOXO is more pink than Girl Next Door but both are in same intensity and dusty rose tones which i like for my looks lately.

I just want to say that I’m so proud of this brand and new colors. I’ve been wishing they’d have less bright colors for their lipsticks and tadahhh!, my wish came true. Good job, Pink Sugar and will definitely watch out for new launches!

What do you think of these swatches? I wouldn’t use filters na for my reviews so these are exactly taken from my camera – except for the ones with blur’s and texts.

I am #GuerlainPH Beauty Ambassador!

A week ago, I got an email from Guerlain that I’m going to be a part of their Beauty Council – a select group of bloggers, editors and influencers. It was such a kilig moment for me, especially when you’re a beauty enthusiast who rave products like Terracotta, Meteorites, and Rouge G. These are just some famous products from the Luxury French cosmetics brand – among the oldest in the world – now under parent org LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE.

At Guerlain’s pop-up booth located at Greenbelt (near Balenciaga)

I wore these all a few days ago at their booth to celebrate this achievement: I am #GuerlainPH  beauty AMBASSADOR!

Now to jumpstart that, you girls are entitled to a SPECIAL SURPRISE on your fav Guerlain products – just mention the code (MikkiG015) to Guerlain consultants Joralyn or Bevs at their pop-up booth at Greenbelt 5 (near Balenciaga) until June 30, 2016.

If you’re already a Guerlain user, you all know what this means on your luxury staples. Below are some of my suggested and featured items – including the new ones for that ultimate makeup touch. This blog post is a condensed blog for 3-4 Guerlain events I’ve attended since 2014, my first blogging activity with the brand. So I’ll try to share everything I know and recommend! =)

BASES & METEORITES – I knew the legendary Meteorites line from my cousin-in-law The Misty Mom who raves this not-too-shimmery or glittery highlighter. As someone who has fine lines and puffy under eye, I don’t want my highlighters to intensify those. This line has a good consistency (like a perfecting halo) with very fine and ultra lightweight shimmers that reflect light perfectly. If you’re a user of highlighters, you will find that Meteorites (especially the Voyage compact format that retails PHP 9k+) is a an odd out – more like a version of a beauty powder – in a very good way.

Guerlain, the architect of light, reinterprets Météorites with each collection and season, giving all women access to a perfect complexion. I knew more about the line in 20014  – my first Guerlain event – and I just instantly fell in love with this makeup icon.

Now the 2016 line (see below)  has more formats that you can explore depending on how you use it.

In one event as well in 2014, Guerlain challenged us to do makeup of some of their customers and below you can see how soft yet illuminated the base is on my model using Meteories and a favorite too – Blanc de Perle – powder foundation line that illuminates and light-sculpts with Guerlain’s secret ingredient since the 1830’s.

LIPSTICKS – Luxury colors don’t focus on the pigment but the overall feel and look of the product on the lip. I’ve tried and reviewed a few – Rouge G de Guerlain, Shine and Rouge Atuomatique – and they have second-skin texture and impeccable coverage. Just a few months ago, they released the first lipstick under the Le Petitie Robe Noire line which is deliciously perfumed, pigmented and buildable in coverage.

FRAGRANCES – Last but not the least, scents!! And my favorite is the couture scent, Le Petite Robe Noire. I attended the launch of this scent few years ago and I like the Original – a deep fruity floral scent in EDP. I am reminded of my stylish night outs with this scent.  The chemistry? Black cherry blinks the first wink. It is illustrated by a blend of almond, berries and bergamot. The second twirl takes place as rose enters the stage. Finally, tonka bean tonka bean appears, leading you into almond seduction, highlighted by black tea for a smoky concoction.

Aqua Allegoria is my second top pick, a delicate and cheerful line that boasts of raw ingredients and wonders of nature. The new one is Pear Granita which is juicy fruity and fits my skin tone.

That’s my #GuerlainPH list and I suggest you check them out this month at the pop-up booth! Now, let’s go girls! Bonsoir!!

New Tester Series!

While in La Union to spend a short unplanned vacay, I thought that travel sizes / testers / mini’s that we always get from the counters, events, special gift packs or Sample Room, are great tools for quick reviews of full-sized products. With the amount of cosmetics and toiletries that I study, I think that I’ll be placing some of the skin care products that are new/share-worthy/my-fav’s in this series, especially that I use and try to test some of them whenever I escape from the city. Below is my first list (focusing on toiletries) with my thoughts and impressions:

FOR BODY:

  1. NIVEA Soft – This is a classic favorite of mine. I usually always bring my NIVEA Creme tin for skin emergencies (dry skin, rashes, shaving mistakes) but the soft version is a lighter one that can be used especially at day or under the sun.
  2. Belo Sun Expert Body Shield SPF 60+++ * – This is currently being sampled in Sample Room (full-size!!! yey!!) alongside the Perfecting Shield Tinted Sunscreen SPF 50 PA+++. I like that both have broad spectrum for sun protection and don’t feel heavy or give a white cast. Also, it’s good to know that it is infused with Cell Protect® Technology that strengthens the skin’s defense system, maintaining healthy skin while
preventing accelerated premature skin aging. The tinted sunscreen has a good consistency and adapts to skin tone (a bit pinkish though so it would be better for coller tones) but can be layered with foundation – I combine with warmer one. Get your samples in this link (VIP* customers can now avail of 1000pts for only P649 (from P799)
  3. Burt’s Bees Honey & Milk Body Lotion – I always put thicker lotions at night in religious amount to make sure skin’s nourished in the moirning after. This one is almost 100% natural and of course, all the benefits of honey to the body skin.
  4. Perfume Pod* – This is my travel staple because I can transfer the content of my favorite perfumes ( usually the ones with bonggang packaging e.g. Marc Jacobs Dot). It has been around but it will be massively  launched with colors and variants. Stay tuned!

FOR FACE:

  1. Etude House Sunprise SPF 50 PA+++ for Face – This is non-greasy, and watery-like with a good level of sun protection. It has a floral-fruity scent (hint of sunblock smell), that comes from the ingredients like Aloe Vera and Acai Berry to name a few, which also improve skin defense.
  2. Etude House Lettuce & Cucumber – This has 20% cucumber water which is a great calming toner/water for the summer.
  3. Laneige Moisturizers – Very light-weight and deeply moisturizing. I got the gift set few years ago and I really like their moisture lines.
  4. Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream – Prior to concealer application, i use this non-greasy eye cream to prep and refresh/energize my eyes.
  5. Bobbi Brown Instant Long-Wear Makeup Remover – Just like water but potent as oil especially when removing long-wearing products that we always use at the beach =)
  6. Burt’s Bees Lip Balm (Honey)* – One of my top balm choices. Check this post for full review.
  7. NARS skin Luminous Moisture – I am loving NARS’ skin care lately (I just finished the partner toner in full-size which I bought year ago). This one delivers as well with its non-greasy, long-lasting moisture with NARS exclusive Light Reflecting Complex™: wild thyme, beech bud extract, plankton extract, and sophora root extract work in synergy with hyaluronic acid and monoi oil, which immediately moisturize the skin, soothing and comforting dryness on contact.
  8. Philosophy Purity*This cleanser is a wonder!! I don’t know how to explain it but instantly after every wash (doesn’t foam too much), the skin is extra soft and smooth! I just finished the full size of this and it’s one thing I will repurchase because it just melts everything without being really harsh on skin.
  9. Skin Medica Ultra Sheer Moisturizer* – My other clinical moisturizer recommended by Dra. talens of Skin Philosophie

I Met BretmanRock!!

The first time I watched a makeup tutorial by Bretman in Facebook, I already knew that he’s gonna be big in the industry. Combine both real artistry and talent in makeup (contour and eye makeup skillz on point!!), with his comic yet real social statements on beauty, celebrities and makeup, it was easy to like and get a daily dose of inspiration and confidence from him. Such that.. a few months after, he became one Instagram sensation with 5M followers and viral super power.

Bretman Rock at Benefit Cosmetics, SM Megamall

Watching some of his Insta (above is one fave) and Youtube videos, I knew he was a Filipino and he hinted a vacation in the country, which he really liked. It was like Pia Wurtzbach coming to the Philippines especially for a makeup addict, social media sucker, and a drag race fan (I think he gets 30% of his comedy from this) like me. So when I saw Benefit Cosmetics having a meet & greet with Bret (he’s also a global influencer for a quirky-yet-real makeup brand), I didn’t want to miss an opportunity to quite know the crazy and ingenius and gorgeous person behind @BretmanRock.

Processed with VSCOcam with a8 preset

It was clear that Bret’s social power reached the Filipino youth, makeup and social media users alike. People were lining up and screaming his name even outside the store. Benefit allowed me to interview him YAY! I was really curious on his top makeup picks, beauty tips, and his message to the young LGBT Pinoys.

Below are some of the photos and videos I took during the Meet & Greet.

Bret was such a sweet and empowering confidences icon! When we were introduced (of course, I’m Starstruck and I couldn’t stop looking at his eye makeup, lips, brows, everything hehe), he told me about my nice color choices for my hair and lips. He’s a real makeup enthusiast! I did the same and asked some tips and and brands he’s using.

Bret’s favorite Benefit products.

I didn’t have much time but my last question was about his advice to the LGBT youth in the Philippines and I got really impressed by his message, the same way he inserts his smart opinions about makeup shaming, gays, bullying, etc on his fun videos.

I stayed for a little while and saw how he interacted with his Filipino fans. I must say: He’s the best! He embraced each one of them, complemented their looks and styles, and led the taking of selfies/twofies/groupies . Some fans cried and he hugged them tight and sincerely. I even heard him more excited and interested in meeting the public than doing the media/VIP interviews. This is how celebrities should do it!! =)

Before I left, I congratulated him and wished him even bigger and brighter career ahead of him. I couldn’t wait to see more from him in the coming years, and I hope that he does visit the Philippines more often because I really think we need icons like him both in showbiz and beauty industries.

The Skin Expert

The human skin is simply not designed for the world we live in today. There can be a lot attributed to the changes like urbanization, climate change, and a lot more especially in our country where pollution is very high. For example, there are dangerous nanoparticles that are 20 times smaller than pores and easily infiltrate the layers of our skin, to increased UV exposure by up to 85% through electronic devices, and oxidative damage that causes skin to degenerate. I can go on and on and I can personally attest to using anti-ageing products to take care of the largest organ of our body, the skin.

This 2016, beauty and science finally meet as the Pond’s Institute opens its doors in Manila. I have heard of it in commercials and articles in the internet before and I’m happy that this institue, a global network of 700 researchers and scientists that have developed over 200 patented skincare innovations for women around the world, is now here. From Tokyo, Madrid, New York, and Shanghai, the no. 1 face care brand in the Philippines brings its breakthrough and personalized skincare solutions for every Filipina.

Strategically located at the heart of Bonifacio Global City, the Pond’s Institute offers a slew of services that cater to every Filipina’s skin care needs.

Upon entering the institute, Filipinas are given a skin care analysis using a comprehensive equipment.

Processed with VSCOcam with c8 preset

I have seen a lot of skin analyzers in the past and this one measures 7 aspects of the skin which will conclude how your skin fares your age – I just wish they can measure elasticity too!

pond

I like that I was able to do it even with makeup! LOL The total result tell me I’m 2 years older my age but in a way I’m quite happy because I’ve won over my acne already, and it’s just the pores, UV spots, roughness and spots (the higher values over a median) that i need to improve on, especially on my T zone which was consistently detected by the machine.

pond2

I know that pores is the most difficult to combat because that would need resurfacing or even laser surgeries, but UV spots, dark spots and roughness can be taken care of using products at home. With the results of the test, I got a customized skincare regimen from the nice Beauty advisors – Age Miracle, a range that’s infused with the gold standard in anti-aging, retinol, and combined with AHA, CLA and retinol boosters, Pond’s Age Miracle promises to make skin more elastic and increase collagen renewal, despite the damage from pollution.

What’s more—the Pond’s Institute offers free dermatologist consultations every Saturday.

Rebellious Flowers

Here comes the magic of the season, when we are challenged to renew ourselves. As for makeup, it is the time to invent, and reinvent beauty with bright and bold colors and textures – I’m slightly making all the socials more colorful now =)

The trend in beauty pushes us to do no-makeup makeup looks but let’s not forget that we can also get that kind of bloom by being creative and by wearing colors that represent our energy, artistry and interpretations.

rebel1

Last week, I attended MAKE UP FOR EVER’s event and they showed us a collection by Dany Sanz of MAKE UP FOR EVER who reinvented spring flowers for 2016. For her, colors take on a fresh, bold and luminous appearance. All daring exploits are possible for the whimsical artist and I got inspired by this.

Key color cosmetics used for this look

I used the products above, especially the Artist Shadows Palette 3 (Limited Edition; PHP 2500), to create a staggering and enigmatic look for my eyes. Artist Shadows are one of my favorite eye color products, and I was so glad to explore more its metallic, iridescent, satin and diamond finishes. The palette has 9 colors that echo the hue trends this season, arranged as well to assure the right combinations for every interpretations.

Photo 10-02-2016, 6 14 51 PM

As for me, I used the top right purple metallic shade (ME-930), nude iridescent shade (I-544), and yellow highlight (ME-512) using the same eye style, but I placed the middle blush orange shade (I-804) for the lower lash and the apple of my cheeks to make the look more unique, warm but fresh. I complimented them with a thin black liner (forever black!), white-green waterline and volumizing falsies and lower lashes to make it more rebellious.

rev6

For face, I kept it at minimum and the same spectrum of pink, with a cheek color furthered by Sleek’s Face Form. For lips, I used a neutral-rose color highlighted by the New MAKE UP FOR EVER Pro-sculpting lip pen which has a highlighter on the other side.

I’m happy that I got to place more colors on my eyes lately but not the neon kind that you always see in my blog before. I like subtle yet psychedelic kind of colors for my eyes this season. I challenge you too to wear your floral interpretations in your makeup this season!

11 Kylie Lip Kit Dupes

I am fascinated by King Kylie’s glam, specifically with how clean, sexy and on point her makeup is, such that her own brand of  liquid lipsticks and lip liners got sold out immediately after 30 seconds. But what really interests me is how she has found and marketed her own signature colors which i’ve been loving lately because they’re the kind of neutrals that suit my tone and lips well. So here’s a list of dupes availably locally (not at all about textures though) that I’ve studied. It took me a while to figure out Kylie’s colors, really! They’re tricky!!

Kylie Lip Kit dupes

Kylie Lip Kit dupes

I’ve read a lot of good reviews about Kylie’s lip kit, which comes with a lip liner and liquid lipstick – a format I’ve been loving. I love the comments about its formulation (they say it’s even better than its rumoured manufacturer, Colour Pop). But what I love most is the set of neutral colors and how they adapt to different lips as you can see in this viral Buzzfeed review featuring 3 women with different skin tones.

Candy K is described by Refinery as “a dusty rose; I’d describe it as a light ’90s brown”. My favorite is Dolce K which appears darker and more warm neutral brown  or toffee than Candy K. Of course, True brown K is self explanatory and you can see how real the hue is and how it complements all skin tones.

I don’t have the $29 lip kit but I’ve pretty much spent a day or two just looking at swatches, reviews and blogs and comparing them with mine and what I have. I must admit that they’re pretty much unique such that even if I have 12 products here (mix of gifts and buys), I that I i’d have to still mix some to be able to arrive at the exact color.

The Liquid Lipstick dupes from brands Sleek and LA Splash

In my opinion, King Kylie’s Candy K and Dolce K are quite the same, except that Candy is more rose than Dolce. As such, I’m going to compare both in the below swatchfest. Most of these are matte and liquid lipsticks that I love lately, exposed in a warm light.

Swatches of Kylie Lip Kit dupes

Swatches of Kylie Lip Kit dupes

In order of the dupe-st (is there such a word lol), see the reviews below:

Identified 6 Closest dupes to Candy K (neutral/dusty rose). This was much easier as there are lots of rose shades in the market, but still, the level of its “brownness”is hard to find.

  • Sleek Matte Me in Birthday Suit (matte liquid lipstick)* [PHP 450 ] – I think this will be the closest to that beautiful adapting neutral rose color, and to the finish and feel as well, based on the reviews. The color is almost exact and unlike the others, it has this faded rose color which prolly explains the “dusty” description of the product’s color. Also, there’s this instant volumizing/plumping effect due to the not-so-drying and pigmented formula and great brush. Plus, probably the cheapest in this line up. I highly recommend this product and spot this on your next department store visit as these run out quick!
  • Inglot in 405 (matte lipstick) [PHP ] [PHP 800 approx]- Next would be this shade, but this appear darker and a bit more orange under warm light. It’s finish is matte, but not like the liquid lipstick formula. I’ve almost finished this tube because I love its color despite its quite drying formula.
  • LA Splash in Ginny (matte liquid/mousse lipstick) [PHP 600]* – I just bought different LA Splash liquid lippies last year but I also received some from DTC online like this one. I will not discuss this new brand formula yet, but this color is also a close match, with nice pigmentation and consistency.
  • LA Splash in Belle (matte liquid lipstick) [PHP 600] – I bought this one abroad, and while the finish is different (very Nars Orgasm!), the rose brown color is evident.
  • MAC in Kinda Sexy (matte lipstick) [PHP 1000]* – This famous MAC shade looks more peach under warm bright light, but under flash at night, it looks more pink on me. I heard Whirl is a better dupe for Kylie’s line

Dolce K (toffee brown/neutral shade) is a bit harder. Most neutral brown shades have an orange under tone but these are closest that I have found. Regardless as dupes, I like these colors very much especially for my warm skin tones.

  • MAKE UP FOR EVER in MAT 3 [approx PHP 1500]* – This Rouge Artist Intense line is almost always sold out too (a fav of Maggie Wilson!), because it has this nice neutral shade that fits any kind of tone. It’s a bit warmer than Dolce K, but I can see some hints of the kind of brown present in Kylie’s. The product is a bit drying and less matte than others but the color is just nice!
  • SPARK in Naked Desire [PHP 800] – purchased this baby at Passionfly Bazaar last year. This line is owned by actress Karel Marquez, who perfected this shade of orange-brown. It’s quite hard to transfer at first (product is quite hard so balms are needed) but it’s all worth it in terms of consistency and pigmentation, with little drying of lips.
  • MAC in Spice (Lip Pencil) [PHP 1100] – I bought this pencil last year and figured it doesn’t have a lipstick counterpart, but its fits all of the shades below (and above rose colors as well) when outlining and contouring my lip, with a shade that’s very Dolce

Lastly, of course, True Brown K is much easier to match. I found these shades earlier than the Lip Kit launch LOL and they suit me very well! More details on my dark lippie blog post soon but below are previews.

kk

So there it is! 11 possible dupes of the Lip Kit Kylie brand that I recommend!! Best awards go to Sleek, and the True Brown K dupes (MAC and LA Splash) because they resemble the colors very well. Do you know of any more lipsticks that mimick these colors? Let me know!
