90’s Matte Browns
Growing up in the 90’s, I didn’t know so much about makeup but one thing’s for sure, I really like this decade – from video games, pop music and even the color hues that I still really lock up in my mind until now.
Desaturated colors and neutral ones were a hit back then and apparently until now, with the famous nude shades we buy now. But I am really happy that local and international department store brands are recognizing these and offering them at affordable prices.
I got 3 new shades of the new Maybelline Creamy Matte/Mat lipsticks. I was not a fan of this format back then (I reviewed some at Break My Spell) when matte lipsticks started to gain popularity BUT OMFG with these new ones in terms of consistency, texture, coverage and color choices.
Now these matte lipsticks are called Creamy Matte’s and I definitely agree with the label. They look and feel semi-matte. It’s easy to apply and doesn’t feel so dry. The consistency is outstanding with very minimal spaces.
There are 5 shades from the new collection and I think all are sophisticated, bold and perfect for the season. I like brown shades in my collection too because I can combine them with some colors to make it desaturated, but below are my two favorites.
- Swatch of Maybelline Matte Lipstick in Burgundy Crush
- Swatch of Maybelline Matte Lipstick in Nude Nuance
Staying power might be a little weak but for the low price yet level of consistency and coverage, retouches won’t hurt. It might be a little drying after around 5-6 hours so lip balms should be applied before retouching.
With flash, you can see how almost perfect the consistency is, with just 1-2 coats. With regard to color,
Maybelline Matte Lipstick* (PHP 299) – Clay Crush is a orangey neutral nude, Nude Nuance is a nice red-brown shade wile Burgundy Crush is a cool deep dark red.
The shades look perfect for smokey eyes in my opinion because these might look dull on a blank face. Burgundy Crush is a very good dupe of one highly pigmented lippie that I purchased last year, and Nude Nuance (right) is a flattering warm shade.

The best part? It’s only P299. Overall, I am really impressed with how Maybelline develops their lippies lately. I see you, MNY!! Will definitely recommend and repurchase.
